Do-It-Yourself Ethnic Pottery Design

Spring is here and that means time for planting. AND, who says flower pots have to be boring -- or expensive! We took "ugly duckling" flower pots and turned them into "potted swans" -- easily and inexpensively.

How to Achieve the Look

Painted designs (red, purple pots) were hand drawn in pencil and then painted over If you are really artistic, you can paint the designs on from the get-go. Bright colors really pop and look great when placed on table tops, mantles, window sills, etc.

The yellow pot features designs cut from 100% cotton African fabric. The beauty of this is that you can take scraps of fabric left over from sewing projects and cut out your favorite designs and glue them on. Presto! A beautifully designed pot with minimal effort.

FYI, these are wonderful activities to do with a child -- or any loved one. So, turn off the TV, bring out the paint & have some fun!

Materials:

  1. Basic Terra Cotta Flower Pots
  2. 3-4 cans of Paint in Different Colors (oil-based works best; Once you paint the base of the pot, let it dry and then paint the rim a few hours later, or the next day)
  3. Ethnic Fabric: To cut out designs you want to glue on pots
  4. Ceramic Glue: To adhere cut-out fabric designs
  5. Paint brushes: The small, artistic kind and one medium sized one to paint the base of the pots
  6. Turpentine: To clean brushes when switching colors
  7. Newspaper/Paint Tarp: To cover area where you will be painting.

NOTE: These pots are only for inside use because the color has not been set with heat to withstand outside elements.
